1987 was the last year that state school students in England, Wales, and Northern Ireland sat their CSE and O Level exams. In 1988 the very first students took GCSE exams under the revised syllabus. Almost everybody thought that CSEs and O Levels were now written off as history. CSEs are dead and buried, but students sat O Level exams in 1988, 1989, and every year through to 2008.

Unbelievable you might be thinking, but this is the truth. British examination boards have offered their services to foreign countries for decades. In many of these countries the demand for an O Level type qualification is high because the dumbed down British GCSEs are not good enough, so examination boards continue to offer O Levels in foreign countries right up until this day.

Edexcel offers O Levels in a wide range of subjects, but unfortunately, are difficult to take on British soil because of a lack of exam centres offering them.
