The number of UK-born university applicants for 2012 has fallen by 12% due to the raising fees to up to £9,000 per year, says the Ucas admissions service.

According to the first official figures, published by the Universities and Colleges and Admissions Service (Ucas), 52,321 university applicants have applied from within the UK for next September, compared to 59,413 this time last year.
