Press TV, 23rd May 2010Apart from being different in their social function and behavior, autistic children see shadows in a different way from normal children, a new study says.
Previous studies had reported that autism affects the sensory system and the affected individuals, therefore, are better at recognizing details and finding hidden figures within a larger picture.
These studies, however, had pointed out the incompetence of autistic children in perceiving more complex stimuli.
Shadows normally help individuals figure out the presence, number, relative position and the nature of different objects; as for autistic children, they obscure other details, the new study found.
According to the study published in PLoS ONE, shadows interfere with the recognition of objects in autistic children through masking the main picture.
Considering the presence of sensory abnormalities in autistic children, scientists urged parents and teachers to provide rooms with multiple light sources in order to minimize the distracting shadows in these kids.
