Hi I am a real newbie to home ed and have lots of questions!!!

My ds1 (5 and a twin) has HFA (although this is under review as it is thought he probably has AS!) is currently in year 1 at school. He is statemented and has 1-2-1 support but he is not coping, things are getting more difficult and the levels of agression he is now showing at school have escalated terribly. He had his first fixed exclusion last week and I have to say school have done this as 'a last resort'! He has had great support in school but feel that they are not meeting his needs. We have a emergency placement meeting/annual review after the Easter holidays with just about every agency you can think of. So looking forward to that!!! :?

So to get to my point! We feel that no matter what the outcome of this meeting is it will not meet ds1's needs either emotionally or academically. I have discussed things with the Head and whilst she doesn't agree that I should home ed full time she is very supportive. Nothing will be done until after this meeting anyway.

But what do I do? What do I need to do? I understand that I have to de register him from school by letter to the Head but do I have to inform anyone else? Also I have heard that an educational philosophy will need to be written. Do I need to send this to someone or will I be asked for it?

The actual education bit I'm not too concerned about as he has had so many days off school because of illness/informal exclusion/anxiety ect that we do quite a lot already.

Not sure what I've missed out but basically this is a huge shout out for help of any kind!

Many thanks,
Sue

I presume you live in England. You have to inform the school if you wish to deregister your children but you do not have to inform anybody else. You do not have to give a reason why you wish to deregister your children but it is essential to state that they are being home educated. A sample deregistration letter can be found here

Hello and welcome :D
You only have to inform the school that you wish to de-register. We sent a copy of the letter to the Home Education Coordinator at the LEA just because I wanted to be up front about it. The LEA sent a form for us to fill in - nothing complicated. Then about 2 months later the LEA home ed person came for a 1 hour visit. At this visit we chatted about what I was teaching in each subject area and I showed her my resources and my diary that I note down what we are doing each day. She wrote a very nice report and will visit again in 12 months. :D Nothing to worry about :D
Relax and enjoy! :D

Thanks thats reassuringly easy!!!! :D

I feel better having made the decision...we have all been under so much stress that anything will be better than it has been.

Didn't know there was a Home Ed Coordinator...will have to find out about ours. Quite happy for visits etc and will be happy that the annual review has already been done.

Thanks again...although I'm sure I'll be back with more questions

Home Ed Coordinators are recent innovations that did not appear to exist during the two times my son was home educated.
