Cursive writing

Hi , wonder if anyone can advise me, my son has Asperger's, dyspraxia, severe dyslexia and is also left handed. We removed him from school in December and have begun home educating.
At school he was tought cursive writing (I think that's what it's called, joined up writing) and his handwriting is pretty bad. When I write, I print, asked him to try this and I think it's much better. If I get him to forget the cursive and print instead, do you think I would be disadvantaging him for the future in any way? If he goes back to school at some point would it be harder for him if he can't do cursive?

I've always been a great believer in teaching cursive writing from the outset. Most people can write faster cursively rather than using individual letters because the pen is lifted from the paper less. There is also a theory that joined up writing corresponds better to joined up thinking.

There was a time when primary schools used to make kids write non-joined-up (or printing as they called it) and they refused to let kids write cursively until they had mastered printing. I think this approach makes it much harder to learn cursive writing than if it were taught in the first place. Primary schools nowadays generally restrict printing to upper case and teach lower case cursively because of this.

One tip of advice I have is to let your son experiment writing with different implements to find which ones he is most comfortable using. Different writing implements can make a dramatic impact on the quality of handwriting.
